چکیده

The energy spectra of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reported by the AGASA, Fly’s Eye, Haverah Park, HiRes, and Yakutsk experiments are all shown to be in agreement with each other for energies below 1020 eV (after small adjustments, within the known uncertainties, of the absolute energy scales). The data from HiRes, Fly’s Eye, and Yakutsk are consistent with the expected flux suppression above 5 × 1019 eV due to interactions of cosmic rays with the cosmic microwave background, the Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin (GZK) suppression, and are inconsistent with a smooth extrapolation of the observed cosmic-ray energy spectrum to energies > 5 × 1019 eV. AGASA data show an excess of events above 1020 eV, compared to the predicted GZK suppression and to the flux measured by the other experiments.  2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Observation of the GZK Cutoff Using the HiRes Detector

The High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) experiment has observed the GZK cutoff. HiRes observes two features in the ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) flux spectrum: the Ankle at an energy of 4 × 10 eV and a high energy suppression at 6×10 eV. The later feature is at exactly the right energy for the GZK cutoff according to the E1/2 criterion. HiRes cannot claim to observe a third feature at lowe...

Observation of the GZK Cutoff by the HiRes Experiment

The High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) experiment has observed the GZK cutoff. HiRes’ measurement of the flux of cosmic rays shows a sharp suppression at an energy of 6×10 eV, exactly the expected cutoff energy. We observe the “ankle” of the cosmic ray spectrum as well, at an energy of 4× 10 eV. However we cannot claim to observe the third spectral feature of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray regi...

rescence detectors. Two spectral features have been found: The “ankle” is clearly seen at about 1018.5 eV. We have also evidence for a suppression of the cosmic ray flux at an energy of about 1019.8 eV, where the GZK effect is expected to become apparent in the spectrum. The composition of cosmic rays has been measured between 1018.0 and 1019.4 eV using the Xmax method. A measurement of the pro...
